Social Media use ‘Driving Anxiety’ in young people

As much as the internet can be a force for good in this world, it seems we need to spare a thought for the impact it can have on the health and wellbeing of young people all over the UK, with new research revealing that comparing their lives to others on social media sites is making this demographic more anxious about their future.

The Prince’s trust eBay Youth Index revealed that 57 per cent of those aged between 16 and 25 think social media creates a huge amount of pressure to succeed, with 46 per cent admitting that comparing their lives to that of their friends makes them feel inadequate.

Some 38 per cent are worried they’ll never be as happy as the people they come across on sites like Instagram and Facebook, while 16 per cent say they often or always feel panicked when seeing the lives of their friends on online spaces.

“It appears that in the last 12 months nothing has happened to improve the way young people are feeling about their lives. It is very sad to see the Youth Index score remain at its lowest level, and concerning that the considerable decline we saw in the Index last year has shown no recovery,” UK chief executive of the Trust Nick Stace said.
